Apparently Alexander Skarsgård wanted to make a Viking movie for years before landing The Northman

Once upon a time, Alexander Skarsgård starred as an ancient Viking-turned-vampire in HBO’s racy series true blood. Now Skarsgård actually plays a fully-fledged, utterly ragged Viking prince turned berserker in Robert Eggers’ recent outing. The man from the north. It looks like we’ve come full circle here, but apparently the actor would have liked to make a Viking movie much sooner than when he landed. The man from the north.

Alexander Skarsgård sat down with vanity lounge before The man from the northto talk about all things Vikings, and being the Swede that he is, he obviously loves Norse culture and mythology. Apparently the big little lies star has always dreamed big when it comes to Vikings and always wanted to do a Viking epic with odes to real history and mythology throughout. In his words:

I had this dream of one day making a big epic Viking movie, but based on an old Icelandic saga.

Alexander Skarsgård recounted a time in his youth when his father, Stellan Skarsgård (who has his own extraordinary film career) and his mother allowed him to choose the middle names of his younger siblings (of which there are MANY) . He started giving them old Norse names, and I’m bound to believe his brothers are probably glad their parents didn’t give Skarsgård early naming rights.

Alexander Skarsgård wasn’t the only one with this love for Norse culture and the dream of creating a great Viking epic. By chance, he will meet director Robert Eggers, who, coincidentally, also spent his career hoping to make “the ultimate Viking movie.” Together they have created something full of passion and a historically accurate Viking film.

A ton of work has been invested The man from the north; the shooting of the scenes was apparently quite brutal, as was the training it took for Alexander Skarsgård to come across as the perfect Viking berserker. What a transformation it really was for Skarsgård, because even though he was known as the “Guy Who Takes His Shirt Off” in the movies, he looks completely different when he takes off even more in The man from the north.

Alexander Skarsgård may have played a character named Northman on HBO true bloodbut he was able to live out the lifelong fantasy of being a pure-blooded Viking – or at least play one on screen in The man from the north. It’s the kind of passion behind a film that ends up making great cinema.

The man from the north is among the final film releases of 2022, and you can see the fruits of Alexander Skarsgård and Robert Eggers’ labor in theaters now, for which Skarsgård has already received plenty of praise. The film is pretty much unlike any other Viking film, and that may stem from years of protests by those involved. Even if you don’t, years of dreamy childhood and young adulthood are definitely worth a few hours of your theater time.
