Dungeons & Dragons brings big change to Lore in new book

Dungeons & Dragons introduced a few new traditions that could have long term consequences in future stories. Today, Wizards of the Coast officially releases Treasure of the dragons of Fizban, a new collection of dragon related monsters, resources and player options for Dungeons & Dragons. The book is partly a bestiary and partly a collection of options for gamers, but it also sets a potential new wrinkle in the long-established D&D tradition. The opening chapter details the “First World,” a lost singular ancestor of the multiverse of D&D campaign settings. The First World was created by the dragon gods Bahamut and Tiamat, and then populated with chromatic and metallic dragons. Subsequently, the gods of the outer planes invaded the First World and populated it with their own creations – the deadly humanoid races such as elves, dwarves, humans, goblins, and orcs.
The mythical First World is interesting for several reasons. First, he establishes the dragons as the native creatures of the material plane and places all other creatures (and gods) as colonizers who have hampered the dragon’s territory. The First World myth also puts Tiamat, the evil chromatic dragon goddess, in a new, more sympathetic light. The myth notes that Tiamat went on a rampage after the invasion of the First World and was subsequently imprisoned in the Nine Hells in defeat.
The First World myth also mentions Sardior, the dragon deity of the gem dragons. In the myth of the First World, Sardior is the firstborn of the dragons, created by Tiamat and Bahamut. In the myth, Sardior helped Tiamat and Bahamut create the other dragons, but was separated when the First World was destroyed in an unknown disaster. Sardior’s scattered consciousness would eventually become the gem dragons that now exist throughout the multiverse, and help explain why they are able to more easily achieve dragon vision (a phenomenon in which dragons acquire the ability to connect with d ‘other versions of themselves in the multiverse).
The First World informs much of the mythology found in Fizban’s Dragon Treasure and also plant potential seeds for the future major scenario. The book features a new cult known as the First World Heirs, who believe that the current multiverse must be destroyed in order to undo the division of the First World. Mythology also suggests a dark past for all non-dragon gods, as they invaded the material plane and ripped it from the claws of the dragons.
Like just about every piece of lore introduced into Dungeons & Dragons During its current Fifth Edition era, First World Mythology is optional and can be used or discarded at will from a Dungeon Master. Nonetheless, it sets up some intriguing storylines that Wizards of the Coast (or any Dungeon Master) can explore in future campaigns.
