The following contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 2, currently streaming on Netflix.
Although Netflix’s beloved series stranger things Set to end with its fifth season, viewers will still have the opportunity to spend more time in the world of Hawkins, Indiana. Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have announced that they are planning a stranger things fallout after the show’s conclusion. What they haven’t revealed yet is who or what this follow-up series will be about.
Considering the deep mythology and the richness of the great characters who make up stranger things, there are countless possibilities for a successful derivative premise. He could follow the other survivors of Dr. Brenner’s (Matthew Modine) experiments, perhaps under the gentler, gentler guidance of Paul Reiser’s Dr. Owens, whose fate is still unclear. Perhaps the spin-off could focus on adult Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) as she navigates her way through the cynical world of the 1990s. While these and myriad other stories may be compelling , them stranger things The character with the richest spinoff potential is Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer).
From the start, Nancy overturned many of the expectations and stereotypes that viewers associate with the types of films that inspired stranger things. Rather than staying on the periphery as an annoyed older sister or falling prey to the all-too-common horror trope of dying after daring to have sex with someone, Nancy has become one of stranger things‘ the most capable and complex characters. In particular, she became a talented, driven and courageous investigative journalist. This, combined with her vast experience of paranormal phenomena, makes her the ideal candidate for new supernatural adventures.
stranger things is an original story, but the Duffer Brothers clearly drew inspiration from ’80s culture, particularly the works of Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter. If the spinoff were to take place further into Nancy’s adulthood, then it would make sense to tap into properties from the ’90s. X filesin particular, would be a great point of reference for a series about an adult Nancy Wheeler investigating various unexplained occurrences.
Such a format would offer the Duffer Brothers greater storytelling freedom than stranger things currently doing. Eleven, Hopper, and her friends have faced multiple threats from the Upside Down, but as season 4 revealed, all of them are actually different sides of the same single threat. While still compelling, this limits the potential for monster variety or standalone episodes. Conversely, a Nancy Wheeler, paranormal journalist the series would allow for a mix of global mythology and monsters of the week, much like X files.
A show about adult Nancy exploring bizarre happenings beyond the Upside Down is exciting on its own, but it would also create the opportunity to check in with others. stranger things alums from time to time. In one episode, she might think about what could have been as she helps Steve, his wife, and their six children escape from a rumbling cryptid, and in the next, she might lean into a sighting of UFO across the country. More explicitly than any other principal stranger things character, Nancy has dreams that lie outside of Hawkins. Yet, like most people, she would always have ties to the house. Its spin-off series could live in this tension and become both familiar and new.
Over the course of four seasons, Nancy Wheeler has gone from typical teenager to aspiring journalist to leader of the anti-Vecna attack team. Moreover, each of these steps, and the smaller ones in between, felt deserved and believable. Nancy is smart, brave, capable, and as experienced as anyone in battling inexplicable creatures. In a series filled with well-drawn three-dimensional characters, she stands out as the perfect anchor for a spin-off.
