Surprisingly successful fantasy actioner impales the streaming charts

Before Disney cornered the market for live-action fairy tale reimaginings, several other claimants to the throne emerged, none of which were more bizarre than Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Realized by dead snowTommy Wirkola, Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton played the titular siblings (with the 15-year age gap between them instantly mocking the prologue telling the familiar story) in an effects-driven fantasy hybrid, d gruesome horror and blockbuster action.

To make things even stranger, witch hunters was a huge box office success after earning $226 million on a $50 million budget, although it was panned by critics to the tune of a 17% score for Rotten Tomatoes. Naturally, Hansel and Gretel quickly gained cult classic status, with there even being talk of a sequel or TV series in the aftermath, neither of which materialized.

Nearly a decade after its initial release, however, the wild reimagining of a tale everyone knows has impaled the streaming charts, earning a spot on the global iTunes chart by FlixPatrol. East Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters a good film? No, it definitely isn’t, but there sure is a ton of fun to be had if you can get on its wavelength.

There’s blood, guts, gore, camp, tongue-in-cheek irreverence, tantalizing mythology that’s never been explored in great detail, and plenty more to enjoy if you’re the type to enjoy. savvy subscriber who loves their action-packed adventures. as unbalanced as humanly (or inhumanly, in this case) possible.
