The Great John Wick 4 Franchise First Confirms The Series’ Action Trouble
While the John Wick 4 trailer promises awesome action and jaw-dropping stunts, can it fix the sequel’s story and character issues?
the John Wick movies may be the most impressive action movie series of the 21st century, but there is an underlying problem with the movies that appear in the John Wick: Chapter 4 trailer. Following a Lionsgate presentation at CinemaCon, descriptions of what’s in the next John Wick payment have been made public. While each John Wick the sequel manages to outdo itself in jaw-dropping stunts and world-building, it gradually moves away from one of the central factors that made the first John Wick so convincing.
The incident inciting the John Wick The series happened when Russian mobsters killed John Wick’s (Keanu Reeves) dog and stole his car after his wife died. Former assassin John Wick then decided to reenter his life of violence for revenge. In his latest film, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, John Wick was betrayed by Winston (Ian Mcshane) after helping him defend the Continental Hotel. John Wick was later rescued by the Bowery King (Lawrence Fishburne) and they began planning their retribution. During the presentation of John Wick: Chapter 4 at CinemaCon, more information about John Wick’s future is revealed. The trailer touts his incredible stunts, primarily when John Wick uses nunchucks to battle enemies in an art gallery.
the John Wick: Chapter 4 The trailer confirms that the series will continue to focus on action rather than story. Since John Wick: Chapter 2, the series moved away from the emotional conceit that made the first film so compelling to focus on world-building and action set pieces. While the action within the John Wick the series continues to outdo itself, the story and the character of John Wick take a back seat to the show of John Wickstunts and action scenes, posing a problem for the franchise’s overall story arc.
The first one John Wick the film had a strong emotional hook for its central character. After watching John Wick lose his wife to cancer only to have Russian mobsters kill his puppy, audiences can’t help but become emotionally invested in John Wick’s journey. The story was simple but emotionally effective: an assassin takes revenge as catharsis for his loss and as a channel for his grief. Audiences watched John Wick mourn his wife and bond with his dog, so they rooted vehemently for him. Although the action of John Wick is truly phenomenal, given that the director is a former stunt coordinator, the vulnerability of John Wick’s grief combined with the severity of his rage is what defines John Wick‘s story apart from other action movies. The character’s motivations were understandable, and the action served the story.
However, after John Wick got his revenge in the first film, sequels focused on expanding the mythology behind The High Table organization and expanding the stunts rather than focusing on John’s emotional journey. in a simple plot. The following plots in the John Wick the sequels revolved around the rules of the High Table organization and how John exists (or doesn’t exist) within those rules. Although the action in the films has become more impressive, as seen when John fights enemies in the catacombs of a Roman amphitheater in John Wick: Chapter 2 or battles using horses and ancient knives in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, John Wick’s emotional motivation became less accentuated. While the first film was a cathartic release of pent up emotion, subsequent films focused on spectacle and mythology instead of creating deeply personal motivation for John Wick. the John Wick: Chapter 4 The trailer seems to continue this trend as the main takeaway from the trailer was that John Wick now uses nunchucks.
Although John Wick: Chapter 4 guarantees a bigger world with bigger action, it cannot guarantee a satisfying emotional journey. There may be times when John Wick confronts his old friends, but given the focus on action in the previous John Wick movie sequels are unlikely to ever have a storyline as tight and emotionally focused as the first film. Although audiences can expect the incredible stunts and nunchucks used in John Wick: Chapter 4 and the fascinating world-building surrounding John’s past as an assassin, the film is unlikely to focus on creating a simple story with a strong emotional arc for John Wick.
